African Drum and Dance

SUNDAYS 11:00am – 12:30pm

Come sweat, move your body and celebrate life! West African Dance is at SHIFT Seattle!

Manimou’s weekly African dance classes focus on the tradtional dances, music, and culture of Guinea, West Africa. Manimou begins the class an invigorating warm-up, he then breaks down the steps of authentic dances from Guinea and then he puts it all together and we heat up the dance floor! All the movements he teaches help condition the body by developing strength, aerobic stamina, coordination, flexibility, and rhythmic awareness.

Manimou Camara

Manimou Camara's strength as a dynamic performing artist and teacher lies in his strong roots with some of Guinea, West Africa's most beloved performing groups; Ballet Merveille and Ballet Saamato. His primary percussion education was spent with Sekou Dico Sylla, Karamoko Daman (Karamo Dama, sangban recording artist for Mamady Keita), nationally recognized Ballet Saamato, and as lead Dundun player for Kemoko Sano's world reknowned Ballet Merveille. In Seattle he works with Spectrum Dance Theater as an Artist in Residence at Seattle public schools, as lead Djembe player for traditional music group Message from Guinea, and he teaches workshops at schools and universities throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. He also teaches weekly drum and dance classes throughout the city and even on the Eastside. Manimou lives to share his passion for dance, rhythms and life.
